September 23rd A Time for Balance

Saleema Barbara-Curtis, MPH

It's a time when mother nature blesses us with her brilliant colors and pampers us with her tingling and soothing breeze.   Autumn is viewed by many as a mystical and magical time of the year.  It is the beginning of a short yet opportune time of transformation, meditation and balance.  It's a time when "stars and planets are lining up for the changes of seasons during the Northern Hemisphere's Autumnal Equinox.

At this point the hours of darkness and hours of daylight are equal in length-roughly speaking.  The name equinox is birth from the two Latin words "aequus" meaning equal and "nox" meaning night.  nationalgeographic.co.uk equinox101

The thought of having equal number of day and night hours, caused me to think about the importance of having balance in our lives.  I also thought about what my  Mom use to say about life and its' seasons "to everything there is a season" and "there is a time for everything."  She would take it a bit further by saying a time to eat, a time to sleep, a time to play, a time to work, a time to sing...  This saying passed down from generations is connected with the importance of living a balanced life.
